The Story of our Boat

The SY Diva Andaman is born from a dream of freedom, a craving for adventure and entrepreneurship and above all, a desire to explore new horizons, above and beneath the ocean. As the idea brewed in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis – it triggered the decision to take the leap and dive into the unknown.

Ideas and resources were gathered, from the beaches of Sulawesi in Indonesia, where traditional Phinisi schooners are still being built. The boatyards of Samut Prakhan in Thailand, with their extensive experience in the construction of wooden fishing boats, also influenced the ideation process.

After a year of hard labor combined with joy, excitement and a very steep learning curve – the ‘Diva’ was born. Her name originated from the apparent fact that she would be a lady of high maintenance and then, from a personal passion for music – the idea that she might be the lead in the opera that was to follow.

One of the underpinning goals was to recycle financial and natural resources and this led to them to use an existing fishing boat hull as the foundational structure of our project. Initial blueprints were then adapted to suit the dimensions of this hull, and then the hull was further adapted to fit the designed specifications.

The SY Diva Andaman, a creation of Diva Marine is a beautiful traditional gaff rigged schooner. With her 35 m length and a 7m beam, she accommodates 7 spacious guest cabins, 2 large ironwood decks offering 200 sq.m of deck area, a gorgeous lounge with an open galley that instantly makes you feel welcome and at home. The scuba diving operation is run in-house, with an immaculate dive equipment deck, the highest standard of equipment and offering personal instructors.

Our Philosophy

Diva Marine is a company driven by passion – a passion for ocean exploration, a passion for marine systems, a passion for learning, a passion for knowledge development, a passion for service and extraordinary experiences. We have conceptualized and strive to run our enterprise on a small scale, locally relevant, social and environmentally responsible operation.

We believe that as a dive-liveaboard in the service industry it is our duty to participate in setting standards of operation and accountability. This has been a process of learning and evolving through careful monitoring of our energy consumption and efficiency, environmental literacy, training of staff. We view this as a critical part towards our bigger goal of impacting business, education, socio-ecological stresses, climate change and other global challenges of the 21st century.

We are committed and strive to incorporate the best available technologies and methods of operating. Continuously investing in R&D for improved systems for our engines, monitoring, data collection and operations. At Diva Marine we believe that the people involved, both guests and crew, are most critical to the value and impact of our venture. It is after all people and our interaction with our environments that will influence life experiences.
